Introducing Issue III: Nocturne (& Call for Staff Members)
What an honour it has been, dear songbirds, to share Half Mystic's second issue with you. To listen to all of the music you sent us, the words you so carefully crafted to pour into the aching loveliness of Issue II: Saudade. It was a joy to make this tender, melancholy, aching thing with you - & we adore seeing your reactions as you hold Issue II in your hands. So now, as the era of saudade comes to a close, the HM team takes a deep breath. We close our eyes. We listen for the next song. And what a great honour it is to introduce the idea we'll be spending the next six months embodying, the theme for Half Mystic's third issue:
nocturne.
(the midnight drive - the shadow dance - the things leftover when the music fades to black.)
Nocturne is defined as a composition inspired by or evocative of the night; it seemed fitting to us to end 2016, a year of such darkness, cradling this idea to our chests. We have hope that you will take the theme of nocturne & spin it into something good & right & real. Something to be proud of. Some kind of hope to listen for even in nightmare-black chaos.
Writing & music submissions for Issue III: Nocturne are open now. Send us your best.
Also, we are pleased to announce that we're opening up applications for new staff members to be part of Half Mystic's team! This is a truly wonderful opportunity to share in a tight-knit community of songbirds & contribute to the creation of a journal harmonious, dissonant, filled & bursting with music.
We are open for staff applications now, with a focus on hiring diverse voices currently underrepresented in our team. Please do join the magic; there is no one else we'd rather have here.
As the aching softens & the drifting photograph lands at last, we hope that you choose to submit your words & music to HM or apply as a staff member. We welcome you with open arms. It is a joy always to watch Half Mystic grow, & we are excited for everything this community is becoming. There is a beautiful thing waiting for us in the distance, & it sounds so much like song.
